March 2008

Steve Hughes has won the first round of the Victorian Open Surfing Championship Circuit presented by Coopers at Phillip Island. He prevailed in solid conditions at Smiths Beach. Hungry after finishing second in this series last year to his younger brother Pete, Steve has started in perfect fashion. He is re-charged and aiming to go one better in 2008.

The second round of the series was held at Gunnamatta Beach where Pete Hughes made the final placing 4th.

Both surfers are now focused on the third round which will be held on home territory, and on surfing their best in the 2008 Rip Curl Pro Trials.

Downey 5th in Australian Titles

11 December 2007

Campbell Downey has finished an impressive 5th in the U/18 Australian Junior Titles held at Waitpinga Beach in South Australia.

Advancing to the semi-final round, Campbell has proven he can match it with heavily promoted 'big name juniors' at the elite level. More information is available at Surfing Australia's website.

Too many outstanding local Aireys Inlet and Fairhaven surfers have made it at this level, only to attract limited exposure and backing. With all the major surfing labels head quarters only 20 minutes down the road it's hard to understand why. We urge the big companies in Torquay to meet Campbell Downey, Seb Hanson-Boyd and some of the other surfers from the Otway boardriders posting elite results. These are grounded hard working surfers with flair, confidence, respect, appeal and great stories to tell.

Hughes Surfcraft proudly supports local juniors, and continues to support and shape surfboards for Campbell.

Victorian Champion Crowned

17 September 2007

With a perfect record of wins in all three 2007 Tooheys Extra Dry Victorian Open Series surfing events, Pete Hughes is the 2007 state champion. Having already secured the title with two wins earlier in the year, the talented goofy footer retained his dominance in the 3rd event. The West Coast leg was held in ideal offshore peaky conditions at Jan Juc on Saturday 15 September where Pete came from behind to win the final in the last minute of the heat.

Runner up in the West Coast event, and also in the state series, was Steve Hughes who humbly acknowledged his younger brother's outstanding form. The Hughes Surfcraft stable promises to be an imposing force in these championships again next year with Steve motivated to improve on his 2nd place, and Seb Hanson Boyd and Campbell Downey coming up from the U 18 group.

With Victorian championship podium positions secured, Pete and Steve have booked a place in the Bells Beach 2008 WCT trials where they aim to shake things up at the elite level. Pete Hughes is proudly supported by Peak Wetsuits. Both surfers ride Steve Hughes shaped performance shortboards and are proudly supported by Hughes Surfcraft.

Vic Health Junior Circuit 2007 - Strapper Surf Junior

29 May 2007

Local surfers Seb Hanson Boyd (pictured) and Campbell Downey finished strongly in the final round of the U/18 state championships at Jan Juc. Seb placed 3rd, while Campbell also made it to the final placing 4th. Full results can be found at Surfing Australia's website.

Both surfers were very consistent throughout the 3 round series with each securing a round victory. Their consistency was rewarded with Seb finishing overall 2nd in the Victorian State Championships and Campbell placing overall 3rd. Congratulations guys.

This caps of an impressive series of results for both surfers at the State Titles, Rip Curl Shield and School Titles. Credit must go to the strong junior competitive development of the Otway Boardriders where both surfers are members. Watch this space as we follow the emerging talents of Campbell and Seb and other members of the club. Both now qualify to represent Victoria at the Australian titles in September.

Campbell and Seb are proudly supported by Hughes Surfcraft.

The 2007 Rip Curl Shield

9 May 2007

Lorne Aireys Inlet P-12 School have won the 2007 Rip Curl Shield in a closely contested final by .9 of a point. The standout wave of the day was from Aireys Inlet surfer Campbell Downey, scoring a 9.5 ride in the final, claiming the wave as his power wave, which meant the score was doubled. Full details at Surfing Australia website.

Seb Hanson Boyd also perfomed well the next day finishing 2nd in the U19 Vic Health School Surfing Titles. Both surfers are preparing for the final round of the Vic Junior circuit and are proudly supported by Hughes Surfcraft.

Pete Hughes is 2007 Victorian Open Champion after a clean sweep of victories in the East Coast and Phillip Island series events. The talented goofy footer excelled on the powerful beach breaks of Rye and Woolamai standing out with his trademark flair and tuned competitive abilities.

The win adds to his illustrious career which includes a 2nd place in the world junior title. With the Victorian championship secured, Pete has put the surfing world on notice of his re-emergence after a rest from the WQS grind. Boosted by the win, and training "flat out", Pete has his sights set on the Bells Beach WCT trials where he aims to shake things up at the elite level. Vic Health Junior Circuit 2007 - Round 3 Island Surfboards Junior U18

24 February 2007

Local surfers Seb Hanson Boyd and Campbell Downey (pictured) continue their impressive results in the Victorian Junior titles. Competing in the under 18 division, Seb placed 1st, while Campbell also made it to the final placing 4th. Campbell has been almost unbeatable so far in the series, but after a slow start in the early rounds, Seb peaked when it counted taking out the final. This is almost a reverse of the results from the prior round and both surfers are placed very well coming into the final event. The results can be found at Surfing Australia's website.

The Strapper Surf Junior (officially round 1 of the titles) has been postponed until the 26th - 27th May. With the advantage of a home coast finish, Seb and Campbell are focussed on continuing their winning form. Both surfers are proudly supported by Hughes Surfcraft.

Vic Health Junior Circuit 2007 - Round 2 Beans Balin Surfboards Junior U18

18 February 2007

Campbell Downey and Seb Hanson Boyd have posted impressive results in the opening event of the Vic Health Junior Circuit. Campbell won the Beans Balin Surfboards Junior held at Rye Back Beach 17th - 18th February, while Seb made it to the semi-finals placing equal 5th in the same event. Full results can be found at the Surfing Australia website.

These are the best results posted at this high level of competition by Aireys Inlet / Fairhaven surfers since the Hughes boys and Willy Day dominated the series some years ago. The results are turning heads. Each surfer has a different style, Campbell displays a confident showman approach, while Seb is more understated letting his well grounded surfing do the talking. However, both are determined to do well in the remainder of the series. More reports will follow here as subsequent rounds are held. Both surfers are proudly supported by Hughes Surfcraft.

Hughes Surfcraft

Leadership

It's no surprise that young Aireys Inlet and Fairhaven surfers stand out when they have the talents of all three Hughes boys on show to admire and aspire to. But what really sets local juniors apart is their surf attitude and actions. They surf with flair, confidence, and above all respect.

A large part of this must be attributed to Steve, Trevor and Pete Hughes. They lead by example. Despite being head and shoulders in ability above most in the water, they find their own space, never hassle or snake, are friendly and approachable, and promote enjoyment out in the surf.

It's a lesson all of us surfers can continually learn from.
